February 22, 2016
If you have bar envy over your friend’s 50+ bottle stash but don’t have a wallet bursting at the seams, this post is for you! Creating your home bar doesn’t have to break the bank. With a few tools and and only five bottles, you can mix up a wide variety of drinks to keep your family and friends happily sipping for quite some time. Here’s exactly the five liquors you need for a perfect home bar on a budget:
Why?: Because it essentially has zero flavor, meaning it can be added to just about anything. It’s a catch-all mixer. Perfect for the fanciest of fancies and the craziest of ragers.
Classic Drinks to Make: Moscow Mule, Cape Cod, and Bloody Mary
Brands to Try: Tito’s (Made in the USA!) [$15], Belvedere [$30], Chopin [$30]
Why?: Because everyone needs some therapy in a bottle every now and then. But really, whiskey is great to have on hand for anyone who wants to whip up some classic cocktails with a kick.
Classic Drinks to Make: Old-Fashioned, Manhattan, Sazerac
Brands to Try: Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey [$30], Bulleit Rye Whiskey [$45], George Dickel Rye [$40], Thistle Finch Rye Blends (Made right in Lancaster PA!) [$32-$38]
Why?: Because it’s all about feeling like a pirate, mate! Rum can be classified as light or dark. Usually, light rums are best for mixing, which makes light rum a perfect addition to any beginner bartender’s collection.
Classic Drinks to Make: Mojitos, Mai Tai, Daiquiris
Brands to Try: Cruzan [$13], Tanduay Silver Rum [$20]
Why?: Because you feel like a million bucks when you’re drinking bourbon. Bourbon is a versatile spirit. Depending on what you buy, you can use your bourbon for creating cocktails or for sipping if you’re feeling extra dapper that evening. Bourbon can create a really nice cocktail in a flash for even the fussiest of guests.
Classic Drinks to Make: Manhattan (different variation than above), Mint Julep, Whiskey Sour
Why?: Because it’s time to prove to yourself and others that gin is no longer the liquor no one likes. If you haven’t tried gin in a while, give it another whirl. Sometimes, buying the right type and having it mixed right can make a world of difference. Plus, there’s a huge history behind gin that is fascinating. Learn about it and start a conversation!
Classic Drinks to Make: Tom Collins, Martini, Gimlet
Brands to Try: Bombay Original (not Sapphire, unless you want to stick with Gin & Tonics) [$22], Beefeater [$23], Tanqueray [$27]
If we were going to add a sixth to this list, we would probably throw tequila in there, too, but tequila is one of those liquors only a few people love; unless you’re one of them, we’d skip it to save some cash.
So… the only question is: what are you mixing up tonight?
