Mixology Parties 101: What You Need to Know
February 27, 2016
It definitely is nice to go out on the town with your friends, but there is something to be said for enjoying something new right in the comfort of your own home. If you’ve ever had a personal chef come to your house and cook for you and several of your friends, you know the joy of having an expert show you the way to really work the kitchen.
Mixology parties focus on the same premise a private cooking demonstration would. Mixologists are all about having a great time while showing you and your friends how to whip up some tremendous concoctions with beer, wine, spirits, and liquors. If you want to throw a mixology party, here’s three things you need to know:
IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BREAK YOUR BANK: Too many people get it in their head that hosting mixology party is only for an elite group of people. You don’t have to make anywhere close to six figures to host one of these bad boys. We can create a custom menu for you that fits your style and budget.
IT’S HALF TASTE TESTING, HALF EXPERIENCE: You know how you enjoy going out to the bar with friends and relaxing after your work day? A mixology party is exactly the same thing, just with an expert guiding you through the steps. You’ll receive an interactive experience AND get to enjoy your friend’s company as usual.
GOOD MIXOLOGISTS FOCUS ON YOU, NOT THEMSELVES: Ever have a bartender that just was super arrogant and didn’t bother explaining things to you, as if that drink he or she was making was top secret? Yeah… we’re not like that. As a mixologist, we’re here to explain, demonstrate, and walk you through making outstanding drinks. There’s a reason why this is called a mixology PARTY - it’s supposed to be fun!
So, does a mixology party sound like something you’re interested in? If so, here’s the 7 steps you need to take to throw a great one for your friends and family!
Choose a Theme No, we’re not talking costumes. Depending on when you’re throwing the party and who is attending, there should be a common uniting factor. Does everyone attending like beer? If so, let’s focus on mixing up some great beer cocktails. If it’s around Christmas, let’s stick to some great holiday favorites and creations. Having a theme helps you to narrow down a bit the drinks we can make, too.
Send out the Invite Once you have your theme, you can send out the invites! Doesn’t matter to us whether you do snail mail invites, text, or email, just make sure you put all of the pertinent info in: date, time, dress (if you want people to dress up), and a sample menu or description of the theme. Also, keep in mind your space. If you want to host this mixology party in your tiny apartment kitchen, keep in mind we’ll need space to work, and it won’t be enjoyable if 20 people are crammed in one small area. Keep your guest list intimate and within reason to accommodate everyone.
Hire the Right Bartender Hiring a mixology bartender is a little different than hiring an event bartender. The best event bartenders are the ones who can serve as many people as quickly as possible while still being personable with guests. When you’re hosting a mixology party, you want your bartender to be even more personable and to describe exactly what they’re doing to a T. Mixology bartenders should be extremely service oriented and able to make adaptations to drinks on the fly.
Focus on Food, Too You can’t expect everyone to dive right in to drinks without providing some sort of food. Now, you don’t have to provide a full meal or anything, but make sure you have enough snacking items that fit your theme to ensure guests aren’t getting so tipsy, they can’t enjoy the demo.
Mix Classic and New Age One of the cool things about a mixology party is it allows you to experience a wide variety of cocktails and other concoctions without ordering all of them at the bar. It’s amazing what two or three bottles of liquor can make when you have different mixers and know some of the shortcuts good bartenders use. Make sure you pick a few classic cocktails to make for the evening, and we can put some trendy twists on these for any one who wants to try something new. If your friends are into more funky drinks, we can mix something up for them, too!
Ditch Likes and Dislikes at the Door If we had a nickel for every time we’ve heard someone say, “I don’t like gin” only to then reverse that opinion after we mix them up a drink with gin in it, we’d be some darn rich bartenders. One of the great things about hiring a professional mixologist is you’re not only paying them to do demonstrations the night of, you’re also able to pick their brain about what alcohol to buy and what to try. If you think you don’t like something, we think you should still give it a whirl. We mix our drinks differently than any other bartender will, so you may think you hate tequila, but let us take on the challenge!
Get Your Camera Ready In between sips and brews, you may want to snag a few photos. We’ve got some great tricks up our sleeves for bartending. Document all of the fun you and your friends are having at the mixology party and then share the images!
