3 Central PA Breweries with Big Flavors
February 29, 2016
Drinking the same old thing every evening after work can be a bit of a bore. If you live in the Central PA region, you’re in luck! You can take your tastebuds on a hoppy journey just by venturing only a few miles from your home. From citrus-infused brews to a more robust stout, your options are endless. To get you started, here are three breweries in the Lancaster/York area that are high up on the list.
There’s big flavor a’brewin’ in Pennsylvania Dutch Country. After more than 55 years, Wacker Brewing is bringing Joseph Wacker’s legacy back to life by creating tremendous brews, right here in Lancaster!
What to Try at Wacker Brewing Co.: Wacker’s Little Dutch (5.0%): The Dunkel might not sound familiar, but you’ll want to get familiar with it after taking your first sip. Dunkel means “dark,” and this refreshing type of beer dates back to 1516 in Munich, Germany. The Little Dutch boasts a somewhat bready flavor and will drink like lager with a lighter, clean finish. From a new beer drinker to a beer connoisseur, this one is a crowd pleaser.
Only a short drive over the river will take you to one of the best cider brewing places in Pennsylvania. Scott Topel serves as Wyndridge’s cider master, and boy, does he know his stuff.
What to Try at Wyndridge Farm: Wyndridge Crafty Cranberry Hard Apple Cider. On a hot summer day, nothing is better than this tart, refreshing cider to revive your senses. It has a very clean flavor, which is probably because Topel doesn’t use excessive sweetners or frozen concentrates to create their beverages. Kick back and relax with one of these fantastic ciders!
Welcome to the first established nano-brewery in Lancaster County! For those of you that aren’t sure what this term means, a nano-brewery is a brewery that purposely brews its beer in small batches. Rumspringa brews beer varieties ranging from a citrusy APA to a more robust Stout, making it the perfect destination when you’re trying to satisfy a bunch of people with different tastes. Rumspringa Brewing Co. prides itself on using local products, so you can drink that beer in peace knowing you’re helping out the Lancaster County area!
What to Try at Rumspringa Brewing Co.: Wild Oats Stout. Hold on to your hats, ladies and gentlemen! This malt exudes flavors of chocolate and caramel without being too sweet. It has a silky and smooth finish and is a great beer to pair with some ribs slathered in BBQ sauce.
All of the above breweries have a variety of different beers to try. If you’re looking for the full experience, call them to schedule a beer flights tasting!
