5 Irish Whiskeys $50 and Under Fit for St. Patrick's Day
March 10, 2016
You can’t spell St. Patrick’s Day without WHISKEY!… Well, on second thought, maybe you can. BUT St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect opportunity to purchase a new bottle or two of Irish whiskey to broaden your horizons. Even if you’ve tried it in the past, give it another whirl if you didn’t care for it. There are so many brands out there, and all have a different flavor.
Here are some of our absolute favorites for under $50 to make your St. Patrick’s Day a success.
While this one may be the most affordable on the list, don’t pass over it. Tullamore Dew is triple distilled and is aged in both ex-bourbon and sherry casks. It has a very smooth flavor with hints of fruit and vanilla sweetness. It finishes with a buttery smoothness on the palate. The original Tullamore distillery opened in 1829 in Tullamore town.
Described as easy going and approachable, this Irish whiskey is ideal for new whiskey drinkers and connoisseurs alike. It has a smooth and sweet taste at the beginning and finishes up nicely with a malt after-taste. The pot still they use is over 180 years old and is still used today! This blend has won numerous awards.
You can’t go wrong with original. Jameson Original is a blend of pot still and fine grain whiskeys, which gives it a unique flavor. Like Tullamore, this blend is triple distilled. It’s also aged for a minimum of four years. On the nose, Jameson has a peppery and spicy wood scent with a light undertone of florals. On the tongue, it’s been said to have a nutty, spicy and vanilla flavor that has a smooth finish.
This classic blend of The Wild Geese is a double distilled single malt and grain whiskey that is aged in bourbon casks. Tasting masters say this whiskey has a wonderful character, and it’s received very high ratings. Unlike most other Irish whiskeys, The Wild Geese has a fuller and creamier taste and ends with oakiness. It’s definitely a must try for any Irish whiskey drinker!
REDBREAST 12 YEAR OLD ($50)
May I introduce you to the only continuously produced 100% pure pot still Irish Whiskey out there (for those of you not familiar with this term, “pure pot” is the term given to whiskeys made in copper pot stills). Redbreast 12 Year Old is a well balanced and complex whiskey, perfect for those who like a good sip to analyze. It has a fruity kick, with hints of toasted marshmallow, maple syrup and toasted coconut.
Always remember to drink responsibly if you’re going out for this holiday! Cheers!
